Unfortunately, finding a trustworthy moving company is not as easy as calling the first movers you find. A lot of inexperienced and cheap movers seem to offer unbelievable deals, and it’s easy to get fooled if you don’t know what to look for in a trustworthy moving company.
It’s up the consumer to find and hire a reliable moving company that you can trust with your property, with your home, with the timetable, with the rate they quote, and more. Here are five common concerns consumers have and how to fact check your moving company to be sure they are a service that you can count on.
First off, are they properly licensed? If you need a mover to take you between states, they should have a United States Department of Transportation number. This unique license number can be searched for here: DOT.gov.
If your move is inside the state, the company needs a state license. You can check for proper insurance and registration on file with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. http://www.dmv.state.va.us/#/.
Is the moving company insured? Use the same websites above to confirm that the company has insurance. It should go without saying to avoid movers without insurance or the proper license. It’s also a good idea to see if any personal items are covered during a move under your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance policy. If they aren’t, consider adding supplemental moving insurance just in case.
Do they have positive moving company reviews posted online? Here, social media can be your best friend. See what sort of presence they have on sites like Facebook or Twitter.
If lots of people have negative things to say about the company you’re eyeing, it’s best to look elsewhere. Also, definitely see if there are any complaints lodged against them on the Better Business Bureau’s website http://www.bbb.org.
Do they have any letters of recommendation? Or have they earned any awards or other accolades? It’s definitely fair to ask the potential movers for any letters of recommendation from previous clients. If they do provide them, consider following up with them to get more details on their moving experience. Also, see if the company has earned any “best of” or community awards for their service. That extra seal of approval can give you a little more confidence in your choice.
What do the rates actually include? Just because a mover has low rates does not actually mean you will end up with a low final bill. Double check to see if their rates change based on the day of the week or the season? Also, see if fuel charges are incorporated into the rate.
